In the 2010 business year, the airlines in the Lufthansa Passenger Airlines welcomed more than 58 million passengers on board their flights. The Lufthansa Passenger Airlines fleet currently consists of more than 410 aircraft. With its ongoing expenditure in fleet renewal, the Lufthansa Group is consistently making the fleet more cost-efficient and its operations more environment-friendly. In July 2011, Lufthansa launched a six-month bio fuel trial on regular scheduled flights. A Lufthansa Airbus A321 will fly the Hamburg-Frankfurt-Hamburg route four times daily. One of its engines will run on a 50/50 mix of regular fuel and biosynthetic kerosene. Since bio kerosene has similar properties to those of conventional kerosene it can be used for all aircraft types without any need for modifications to the aircraft or its engines. During the six months test run period, the use of bio fuel will reduce CO2 emissions by up to 1,500 tonnes.

In summer 2011 Lufthansa is operating a fleet of eight Airbus A380 in the configuration of 526 seats. The entirely new First Class cabin with eight generously proportioned seats on the upper deck gives reflects the concept of individuality and offers the ultimate in comfort and technical innovation, which further enhances the travel experience. Also on the upper deck is the prize-winning Lufthansa Business Class cabin with 98 seats. On the main deck, the 420 seats in the impressively spacious Economy Class cabin provide an unprecedented level of passenger comfort. On 11 June 2010 the A380 commenced its scheduled flights on the Frankfurt-Tokyo route, replacing the current Boeing 747-400 service. By the A380s had been put into service on routes to New York, Miami, Johannesburg, Peking San Francisco, Tokyo and – from winter 2011/12 on – to Singapore.

The Lufthansa Group currently employs around 117,000 people. In the 2010 business year, it returned revenues totalling 27,3 billion Euros.
